Chapter Seven

Nearly a week has passed since Craig’s mother offered him the baking and now she wanted an answer. “You need to make a decision. If you don’t want it I will put it up for sale. Don’t feel like you’re pressured to take it over. I will not be offended if you don’t. It was your father’s dream and not yours.”

He’d done a lot of thinking and a couple of times chatted with Glenn over the phone. Glenn was taken with the idea and told him to go for it. He even offered to come out to assist in any way he could with the reopening. “I want it,” he said. “I’ll never get an offer like this in my lifetime. Saying no wouldn’t feel right.”

“That’s good. I get my lawyer to draw up the papers to have everything signed over to you. That shouldn’t take too long.”

“Glenn said that he’d come here to help if I wanted him.”

“That’s the special someone in your life?”

“Yes.”

“Then tell him to come out. There’s an apartment over the bakery. It’s been empty for years. A good cleaning would get it back in shape. You’d have your own place.”

Craig had forgotten about the apartment. It was always rented when he was a kid so he never got a chance to see it inside. “That would be awesome.”

“I can give you the keys to it. Like I said, it isn’t bad at all.”

“And you’re sure that you’re okay with all this. It’s some pretty big changes for you.” He wondered if she’d be able to cope once everything was signed, sealed, and delivered.

“I need change in my life, Craig. I really do. I want to see and experience different things. I want to meet new people. I’d like to travel. Italy and France are both on my bucket list. Oh, and a cruise. I want to feel free again.”

“Like a bird,” he added, wanting to laugh. She wasn’t being silly not really. Yet, it was joyful to see her smile. It was a side of his mother that he’d never had the pleasure of seeing before.

“I guess, but I don’t like flying,” she replied. “Not so much like a bird after all.” She laughed and shook her head. “I’m being silly.” She flashed him a crazy look. “Let’s go see the apartment now. There’s no time like the present to get things done.
